Parenteral nutrition

TPN

The term TPN stands for total parenteral nutrition. Parenteral nutrition is a method of providing nutrition to your body through veins. Depending on the type of vein you are choosing, this procedure is often named either total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or peripheral parenteral nutrition (PPN). This form of nutrition is there to help people who cannot get core nutrients from food. It is often used for people suffering from chronic diseases like Crohn's disease, Cancer, Short bowel syndrome, and ischemic bowel disease. Parenteral nutrition delivers nutrients such as sugar, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and electrolytes to your body. These nutrients are the necessary components that help one maintain high energy, hydration, and strength levels. Sometimes people can take certain types of nutrients only intravenously. Our team of nurses and administrators helps you with your nutrition needs. In TPN, a bag containing nutrients is attached to a needle with the help of a tube so that the nutrients reach your blood faster.

Below are listed some of the reasons when the patients should use TPN solutions:

  • Reduced protein content and a high percentage of amino acids are provided to patients suffering from renal insufficiency and liver failure.
  • Doctors often prescribe limited liquid intake for heart or kidney failure patients.
  • A lipid emulsion providing non-protein calories is often prescribed to minimize carbon dioxide production for patients suffering from respiratory failures.
